That defines Nagios in short, but what it actually is, you will come to know further. As you are here we can presume that you are already familiar with the Nagios features, but still we will explain it a little bit to clear any confusion.
So basically it provides a way to:
- Monitor the IT infrastructure components available with you that might be vary from a server to a router or a printer and it could be an application or a service running on a server or may be available network protocols on a device (again server, router, printer, etc.). So it gives you a comprehensive report to you by showing stats and status.
- Alert the IT infrastructure management team of failures, critical situations, or some changes, by sending e-mails, SMS or other ways. It automatically takes those steps on predefined circumstances and helps in bring fast solution to the problems. The designated staff can bring services up on being notified.
- Reporting the admins by report generation when asked for. It gives a comprehensive report of historical data which has alerts, events, notifications and outages details. It keeps you informed and you can decisions according to these reports and plan accordingly for upgrades and actions.
- Scheduling the maintenance timings (so that it stops the alerts for that time period), scheduling alerts for multiple people involved according to days and time. Scheduling the health check timings and other threshold check-ups.
